Autism Assessments
(Ages 6 through 18)
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can look very different in different people. Autism evaluations often begin with a screening interview or questionnaire, which focuses on social-emotional reciprocity, understanding of relationships, sensory sensitivities, and restricted or repetitive behaviour. If the information gathered suggests that a child might be autistic, then a more in-depth evaluation is conducted.
An autism assessment involves three key components – a parent / caregiver interview, the completion of various questionnaires, and direct observation through play and interaction. The parents / caregivers are interviewed about the child’s development from birth to the time of evaluation, and will focus on specific symptoms of autism. This interview may also explore pregnancy and birth history, health history, school history, behavioural and emotional health, and any other details that may affect the child’s behaviour or development.
